By Imran Malik
How To Learn WordPress is a WordPress Tutorial Series. In this WordPress tutorial, I am going to guide you how to set up WordPress & how to start building your own WordPress website. WordPress has made web design/development an easy task for everyone. You just need to learn how to install WordPress on your localhost, how to configure the MAMP server and how to start building your first WordPress website. In my last article on WordPress, I taught you about how to set up WordPress on Your localhost
In order to develop a website on your localhost, you need to install the WordPress software in the public folder of your localhost. For the purpose of this tutorial specifically, I have created a new folder in the public folder/root directory with the name of “blog”. I have copied the latest version of WordPress software which I downloaded during our first tutorial, into the folder “blog”. The next thing we need to do is to create a database for our WordPress website. I created a database with the name of “blog” in MySQL Server. A step by step description of all this activity is shown below. To help you understand the whole process, I have attached pictures of all these steps.
Let’s start the proceedings where we left them in the last article.
How To Configure MAMP For Windows?
First step in how to learn WordPress tutorial begins with the configuration of MAMP server.
The First Thing you need to do is to start your MAMP server. Click the MAMP icon on your desktop, it will open up the MAMP application. You will get the following screen
To download and install MAMP on your computer, read the part 1 of this tutorial. Here is the link
Before we proceed further, make sure that both of your “Apache Server” & “ MySQL Server” are running as shown in the red box in the picture below. If they are not running, you can start them by clicking the “Start Servers / Stop Servers” button as shown in the yellow box in the picture shown below.
How to Make a Folder for Your WordPress Website in Web Server?
In this section of how to learn WordPress tutorial, i will teach you how to make a web directory in your web server.
Now we need to click on preferences button in the MAMP application, click on “Web Server” tab marked in red box as shown in the picture below.
Now have a look at the Document Root: marked in Yellow Box. This is showing you the path to your public folder or your root directory where you will store your WordPress Website on the localhost. Click on the “Open” button marked in Green Box, you will get your root directory as shown in the picture below.
You can see in the picture above that I have three folders in my root directory. These are three different WordPress websites. Now for the purpose of teaching you, I will again get back to MAMP application and see what databases we have in MySQL Server. I am focusing on “Blog” folder. I have already set up a database with the same name in MySQL Server.
How to Set up Database for WordPress Website?
At this stage of how to learn WordPress tutorial, you will learn how to create a database for your website.
Click on “Open StartPage” in MAMP application as shown in the picture below
This will open an admin page of your localhost as shown in the picture below
Click on the Tools Menu as shown in the Red box in the picture shown above. The First Option you will have is “PHP myAdmin”, click on this and you will have the admin page of MySQL Server as shown in the picture below
On the Left-hand side of this picture, you will see your databases for your WordPress Websites, for the purpose of this tutorial, let’s focus on the one marked in the red box. You can see that name of this database is “blog”, exactly the same as the name of our folder in the root directory as shown in a picture above. I am showing that picture here again.
If you don’t know how to create a new database for your WordPress Website, I discussed that in detail in my last article. Here is the link
We downloaded our WordPress software in the last tutorial, if you need a copy of the latest version of WordPress, here is the link
you need to copy that your WordPress files in the “Blog” folder of your root directory.
Go back to Step 3 & Step 4 as shown in the pictures above
How to Copy WordPress Software in Your Web Directory?
This section of how to learn WordPress tutorial will guide you about how to copy WordPress software.
You will open up your root directory and start copying “WordPress” software in the Blog Folder as shown in the picture below
In the picture shown above, you can see the WordPress software, which has been copied in “blog” folder in the root directory. Green Box is showing you the path of this directory.
There we go, we are now ready to start building our first WordPress webpage.
Now go into your web browser and type
This would display a list of web directories in the localhost as shown in the picture below.
For this tutorial, we have used “blog” folder, so I am going to click on “blog” link
The first screen which will come up after clicking the “blog” link will ask you to provide your database name; database username, database password, database host & the last option would be to rename your database with a “wp_” alias.
We will provide the following details according to the database we created
Database Name: blog
Database User Name root
Database Password root
Database Host localhost
Database Rename wp_blog
After filling out this form, click on the button, this information will be submitted and you will have the next screen as shown below
Now in this screen you need to provide a title for your website, lets say it is “my blog”, next you need to choose a username, a password has already been provided, make sure you copy that and keep it safe as without this password you would not be able to access your WordPress admin section. Provide your email. Click on “Install WordPress” button.
I have filled out this form, you do it according to your own username and email address. It will look like this
I have clicked the “install WordPress” button and WordPress has been installed in our “blog” folder of our root directory. Here is the screenshot.
Now turn on your internet connection and click on “Log in” button.
Provide the details of your login and password which you provided in the last step. You
Would be able to access the WP_admin section of your website. You can start building your first WordPress website here. Here is the final screenshot
In this WordPress tutorial, I have taught you how to create a separate web directory for each of your websites into the localhost, how to create a database for your 1st WordPress website, how to install WordPress software into your web directory in the localhost.
This approach has many benefits and one of them is to have a way to build & test your web pages on your localhost before actually transferring them onto to a live server for web hosting. There are many hosting websites, where you can install WordPress Online but then you would not be able to have the flexibility of designing your WordPress website the way you want before putting it live for your audience.
This tutorial was part of my online series of WordPress tutorials. In the next article, I would tell you how to actually start building your web pages, how to install plugins, how to customize themes for your WordPress web page.
